Autumn has finally arrived here at Suesey Street and while we’re looking forward to the change of season we’re also happy to welcome all of the delicious seasonal produce that comes along with it. We use only the freshest, locally sourced produce here in our restaurant and we want to share some reasons why it is so important to eat seasonal produce.

Freshness

There are certain foods that we all like to enjoy all year round however the best time to eat them is when they can be bought directly from the grower, just after they have been harvested. This will ensure quality and freshness. Buying fruits and vegetables that are in season and plentiful allows you to purchase tastier and more nutritious food compared to produce that is out of season.

Support Local Farmers

It’s important to us that we support local businesses here at Suesey Street and we do our very best to source all of our produce from local farmers and producers. It’s key to being a part of our community and we’re always so grateful to have so much choice here in Dublin. We trust our local producers and believe that the food we serve tastes better because it’s grown with passion by people who love growing safe, fresh, organic produce.

Better supports your immune system

Studies have shown that seasonal produce and the natural cycle of nature are designed perfectly to support our immune systems. Food that’s in season allows us to transition from one season to the next. While all produce is nutritious, fruit and vegetables that are harvested only when they are naturally ripe and fully grown contain more antioxidants and phytonutrients than those that are picked too early. These crops taste better, are much more nutritious, and help us to fight illnesses the new seasons might bring.

Organic and Pesticide free

Crops that are grown out of season require much more care and attention from their growers. Farmers often need to use pesticides, preservatives and chemicals to help grow out of season crops in unnatural conditions. When you decide to choose seasonal food, it is much easier to access cleaner, organic and naturally grown fruits and vegetables that are not only better for your health but also better for the environment.

Protects the environment

As we mentioned above, seasonal fruit and vegetables have the ability to grow without too much assistance from the farmer, however out of season produce is quite the opposite. While the use of pesticides, chemicals and other toxins can help grow produce all year round, it also has a major impact on our environment. These toxins have the ability to pollute our waterways and damage our soil and they have a direct impact on our health and wellbeing. Seasonal foods are also more likely to be produced locally which reduces food mileage and creates more sustainable farming
