It is a well known fact that fish is one of the healthiest foods you can eat, full of key vitamins and minerals to help you maintain a healthy balanced diet. Here at Suesey Street, we know just how important it is to include fish in our diet which is why our team of chefs have put together some great reasons why we should all try to incorporate more fish in our diets.
Maintains Healthy Brain Function
As we age our brain functionality declines making us more prone to neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia, and even diabetes. However, studies have shown that people who eat more fish have slower rates of decline. Further studies show that people who eat fish each week have a lot more grey matter which is a brain’s major functional tissue, this helps regulate a person’s memory and emotion.
Nutritionally Valuable
There are three types of fish available to us, white fish, oily fish and shellfish, all of which are packed full of nutrients that people lack the most. Salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and mackerel are the fattier species, they’re often considered healthier as they contain higher fat based nutrients along with high quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Eating fish will also provide you with vitamin D and B2 riboflavin, as well being rich in phosphorus and calcium. It’s also an excellent source of minerals such as iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc and potassium.
Lowers Risk of Heart Disease
Studies have shown that eating at least two servings of fish each week can help reduce the risk of fatal and coronary heart disease. The unsaturated fats found in fish are known as omega-3 fatty acids, these can help to reduce inflammation in the body that can lead to damaged blood vessels, strokes and heart disease.
Tasty and Easy to Prepare
Fish is delicious, simple to prepare and can be easily incorporated into any weekly meal plan. It is much more nutritionally valuable to eat wild, freshly caught fish as it contains more omega-3 fatty acids opposed to farmed or processed fish. It’s also a food that is simple to cook. Most fish can be baked, fried or seared and it can be easily paired with grains or fresh vegetables for quick, hassle free, healthy meals.
Cultural Importance
Fishing is an important cultural staple here in Ireland and continues to be a big part of Irish life and recreation. While it is nutritionally valuable it is also an important cultural and family practice. Many coastal Irish families still depend on fish as a source of income with the art of fishing, catching and preparing still being handed down through the generations, playing an integral part of Irish life and heritage. Here at Suesey Street, we only use the freshest fillets of fish caught off our Irish coasts and we do our very best to support our local fishmongers.
